The Muslim community in Lille

Lille is home to a dynamic and diverse Muslim community. Whether you are originally from the Maghreb, the Middle East, or elsewhere, Meetarabic allows you to meet people who share your roots, values, and culture.

Lille and the surrounding area

Lille is the site's border city. Roubaix, Tourcoing, Villeneuve-d'Ascq, Wattrelos form with it an unbroken conurbation of more than a million people, and the Belgian border lies fifteen minutes from the centre. In practice, a member in Lille and a member in Brussels are closer to each other than a Parisian and a Lyonnais: thirty-five minutes by train. The Muslim community of the former coalfield, settled since the 1960s, gives the region a depth few French cities have outside the south-east.

Frequently asked questions

Should I search beyond Lille?

Necessarily. Roubaix, Tourcoing, Villeneuve-d'Ascq and Wattrelos form with Lille an unbroken conurbation of more than a million people, with no real break between the towns.

Is the Belgian border an obstacle?

Quite the opposite. It lies fifteen minutes from the centre, and Brussels is thirty-five minutes by train — less than Paris to Lyon. A member in Lille and one in Brussels are effectively neighbours.

Is the Muslim community of the North long established?

Yes. It formed from the 1960s in the former coalfield and the textile industry, which gives the region a generational depth few French cities have outside the south-east.
