Eid al-Fitr 2027

Eid al-Fitr, the festival of breaking the fast, is expected on Tuesday 9 or Wednesday 10 March 2027, depending on whether the month lasts 29 or 30 days: it falls on the day after the last day of fasting. As with the start of the month, the final date is announced the evening before, after the sighting of the Shawwal crescent.

On the morning of Eid, a congregational prayer is held in mosques and prayer halls. It is a day of celebration, family visits and sharing, on which Muslims do not fast.

Zakat al-Fitr: who, when and how much?

Zakat al-Fitr, the charity of breaking the fast, is due for every member of the household, children included, from those who can afford it. It is given before the Eid prayer, often a few days earlier, so that people in need can also celebrate.

The amount corresponds to one measure (sa') of a staple food and is set each year by religious bodies and mosques: in Europe it is a few euros or pounds per person. For reference, the Grande Mosquée de Paris set it at €7 per person for 2026 (1447 AH). The 2027 amount will be announced shortly before Ramadan: follow the official announcement of your mosque.

Understanding Ramadan

A pillar of Islam

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic (Hijri) calendar. Its fast (sawm) is one of the five pillars of Islam, alongside the declaration of faith, prayer, almsgiving and pilgrimage. According to Muslim tradition, it is also the month in which the revelation of the Quran began.

From dawn to sunset

The fast begins at dawn (Fajr) and ends at sunset (Maghrib): during this time, Muslims refrain from eating, drinking and marital relations. A pre-dawn meal, suhoor, is taken before Fajr, and the fast is broken at sunset with iftar, traditionally with dates and water.

Beyond abstinence, the month is a time for prayer, including the night prayers of tarawih, for reading the Quran, for generosity and for self-discipline.

Why the dates change every year

The Hijri calendar follows the phases of the moon: its twelve months add up to 354 or 355 days, about eleven days fewer than the solar year. Ramadan therefore moves about eleven days earlier each year: it falls in February in 2027, in January from 2029, and goes through all the seasons in a little over 33 years. Depending on the crescent sighting, the month lasts 29 or 30 days.

Who is exempt from fasting?

Fasting is required of adult Muslims who are able to do it. Tradition provides exemptions, in particular for people who are ill, travellers, pregnant or breastfeeding women, women during menstruation, and elderly people for whom fasting is too hard. Depending on the case, missed days are made up later or compensated (fidya) by feeding a person in need.

These rules have nuances depending on each situation: if you have any doubt about your health or a treatment, consult a doctor, and for religious practice, an imam or a knowledgeable person you trust.

Imsak, Fajr, iftar: which times matter?

Fajr, dawn, marks the start of the fast and the time of the morning prayer. Imsak is a precautionary margin: our calendars set it 10 minutes before Fajr, as in the timetable (imsakiya) of the Grande Mosquée de Paris. Iftar, the breaking of the fast, takes place at Maghrib, at sunset.

These times change every day (by one to two minutes) and from one city to another. They also depend on the calculation method: depending on the angle used for dawn, Fajr can vary by more than twenty minutes. Our calendar offers six methods, each with its source.

Calculation methods and sources

Ramadan dating: getting to know someone seriously

Ramadan is often a time to reflect on what matters most: faith, family and, for many single people, the wish to build a home.

Since 2007, Meetarabic has helped Muslims looking for a serious relationship, with marriage in mind, in line with their values. During the month, many prefer simple and respectful conversations focused on the essentials: faith, life plans and the place of family.

Ramadan 2027: frequently asked questions

When does Ramadan 2027 start?

Ramadan 2027 is expected to start on Monday, 8 February 2027 (expected date, confirmed in France by the CFCM and the Grande Mosquée de Paris on the night of doubt, the evening before). It may shift by one day; elsewhere, follow the announcement of your local mosque.

When is Eid al-Fitr 2027?

Eid al-Fitr 2027 is expected on Tuesday 9 or Wednesday 10 March 2027, depending on whether the month lasts 29 or 30 days, the day after the last day of fasting. The final date is announced the evening before, after the sighting of the Shawwal crescent.

What is the « night of doubt »?

It is the evening of the 29th of Sha'ban, when people look for the new crescent moon that opens Ramadan. In France, the CFCM and the Grande Mosquée de Paris announce that evening whether the fast starts the next day or the day after. The same process sets the date of Eid al-Fitr at the end of the month. In other countries, local religious authorities make the announcement.

What is the difference between Imsak and Fajr?

Fajr is dawn: it marks the start of the fast and of the morning prayer. Imsak is a precautionary margin, set in our calendars 10 minutes before Fajr. It is customary to finish suhoor by Imsak.

Which calculation method should I choose?

The safest choice is to follow your mosque's timetable. Otherwise, choose the method used in your country: Moonsighting Committee is widely used in the UK and North America, the Muslim World League method across Europe, and Umm al-Qura in the Gulf. Our calendar offers six methods and cites the source of each.

What time is iftar in London during Ramadan 2027?

On the first day (Monday, 8 February 2027), iftar is expected at 17:05 in London, and at 17:56 on the last day (Moonsighting Committee Worldwide method). The time changes by one to two minutes every day: see the day-by-day calendar.

How long is the fast in 2027?

In London, from 11h 14m on the first day to 13h 00m on the last, from dawn (Fajr) to sunset (Maghrib). The length depends on latitude: it is longer in northern Europe than in North Africa when Ramadan falls in summer, and the other way round in winter.

What is Laylat al-Qadr?

The « Night of Decree » is, according to the Quran, the night on which the revelation began; it is described as « better than a thousand months ». It is sought among the odd nights of the last ten nights of Ramadan. The 27th night, the most widely observed, falls in 2027 on the evening of Friday, 5 March 2027.

How much is Zakat al-Fitr?

The amount is set each year by religious bodies: a few euros or pounds per person (€7 for 2026 at the Grande Mosquée de Paris). The 2027 amount will be announced before Ramadan. It is given for each member of the household, before the Eid prayer.

Can you meet someone or get married during Ramadan?

Marriage remains permitted during Ramadan, although some families prefer to wait until after Eid to hold the celebration. Getting to know someone with marriage in mind is not forbidden either; many favour simple and respectful conversations, and marital relations remain excluded during fasting hours. For a personal question, ask an imam for advice.
