Paris and the surrounding area

Searching in Paris does not mean searching across twenty arrondissements: it means searching across the whole of Île-de-France. The Muslim community here extends well beyond the ring road, and many members listed as being “in Paris” actually live in Saint-Denis, Créteil, Argenteuil, Nanterre, Aubervilliers. An RER line or an extended metro puts most of these towns within an hour of the centre. This is the site's largest French-speaking pool by far, and the most varied: widening your radius by a few kilometres multiplies the number of compatible profiles faster here than anywhere else.

Nikah and civil marriage: the order to follow in France

In France the religious ceremony may not precede the civil marriage: that is article 433-21 of the penal code, and it applies to every faith without distinction. In practice, the file is lodged at the town hall where one of the two intended spouses lives, the banns are published, and the civil ceremony takes place. Only then does the imam perform the nikah, and most will ask to see the civil marriage certificate first. A nikah on its own confers no rights: no inheritance, no survivor's pension, no protection in the event of separation. Many couples are unaware of this and find out too late.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I lodge the civil marriage file in Paris?
At the arrondissement town hall where one of the two intended spouses lives, or where their parents live. In the inner suburbs it is the commune's town hall — Saint-Denis, Créteil, Nanterre. Allow several weeks between lodging and the date: the large Île-de-France town halls are busy.
Are families involved in the same way as elsewhere?
Île-de-France brings together very different traditions — Maghrebi, West African, Turkish, Comorian, Middle Eastern — and family expectations vary from one community to the next. Better to raise the subject early than to assume a shared framework.
Do both families need to live in the same region?
Not at all, and it is rarely the case in Paris: many members came for study or work while their family lives elsewhere in France or in the Maghreb. Introductions are often arranged halfway.
